Dry AMD: assessment, monitoring and Valeda Light Therapy

Dry age-related macular degeneration affects the macula, the small central part of the retina responsible for detailed vision. It usually develops slowly and is often picked up on retinal imaging before it is noticed.

Signs and risk factors

  • Blurred or less distinct central vision, especially when reading.
  • Needing more light than before for close work.
  • Age over 50, smoking, family history and high blood pressure increase risk.

How we assess it

Advanced retinal imaging (3D OCT) shows the layers of the macula in detail, allowing small changes to be tracked over time alongside a full eye health examination.

Treatment options

There is currently no routine NHS treatment that reverses dry AMD. Selby & Taylor Opticians is one of a small number of private UK clinics offering Valeda Light Therapy, a non-invasive photobiomodulation treatment, for suitable patients. It is not a cure, results vary and suitability is confirmed at consultation.

When to seek urgent help

Sudden loss of vision, sudden distortion of straight lines, a dark curtain across your vision, new flashes or floaters, or severe eye pain need same-day advice: contact NHS 111, your local urgent eye service, or A&E.

Common questions

Is there an NHS treatment for dry AMD?

There is currently no routine NHS treatment that reverses dry AMD. NHS eye services monitor the condition and urgently treat the wet form. Valeda Light Therapy is available privately at Selby & Taylor Opticians in March and Chatteris.

What is Valeda Light Therapy?

Valeda is a non-invasive photobiomodulation treatment delivering controlled wavelengths of light to the macula in short in-practice sessions. It is not a cure, results vary and suitability is confirmed at a macular consultation.

How is dry AMD assessed?

High-resolution retinal imaging of the macular layers, digital retinal photography for a baseline, visual function checks and a review of symptoms and risk factors, with a monitoring interval set for each eye.

Can dry AMD be prevented from getting worse?

Nothing can guarantee that dry AMD will not progress, but stopping smoking, managing blood pressure and cholesterol, a diet rich in leafy greens and oily fish, protecting your eyes from strong sunlight and keeping regular monitoring appointments all support macular health.

Where can I have dry AMD assessed near me?
